The Story Behind The Quilt - River Walk

The Story Behind The Quilt - River Walk

Hi!

I am so excited to introduce you to the River Walk quilt pattern today and I just wanted to share a little more with you about the quilt pattern itself.

River Walk Design

River Walk was one of the first quilts I designed when I started my pattern writing journey, and it was that journey that is reflected in this quilt. The stepping stones represent the path I took, with the offset nature of the design showing that often the path we choose isn’t always straightforward.

When designing this quilt, I also envisioned the baby size being turned into a large floor cushion and being used in a game by the kids, where they jump from cushion to cushion trying not to touch the floor. So the River Walk quilt design would in itself be a stepping stone in the kids game.

    The Quilt

six curve blocks in shades of blue and taupe linen fabric arrayed on a piece of slate with a small bunch of purple shade dried flowers on top
I used a combination of curves and basic piecing to create a geometric representation of the stepping stones you can often find crossing a river, with the quilt made up of a combination of pieced blocks.
The quilt is labelled as suitable for advanced beginner, simply because it contains a curve block.  But don't worry if you have never tackled a curve block before, as this pattern is ideal to try your hand at curves for the first time, as the block itself is large and the curve is gentle, and there are diagrams in the pattern instructions taking you through the steps to sew the curve.
Other than the curve block, the other blocks are basic piecing and the quilt comes together incredibly quickly.

In terms of skills used, the pattern contains instructions and illustrations to take you through the steps to sew the curves, piece the blocks and ultimately piece the quilt top together.

There are three quilt sizes, with these being baby (32" x 31"), throw (74" x 74") and twin (74" x 86"). Digital illustration of all 3 quilt sizes

    Fabric

The linen fabrics in natural shades neatly folded and stacked, with a small bunch of white and orange dried flowers sitting on top

For the cover sample I have used Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed Linen because of the fabulous natural tones and the lovely texture, all of which emphasis the story behind the quilt.  The colours used are:

    • Sea Foam
    • Aqua
    • Flax

However this quilt also looks just as fabulous using prints - check out Instagram for some inspiration.

    Thank You

Last, but by no means least, I just want to say a massive thank you to all my lovely quilters who have made the most wonderful selection of quilts to share with you.  I will showcase these wonderful quilts and quilters on Instagram over the next couple of days, so if you would like to see these pop over to our Instagram page and give us a follow.
